Tamsyn tells us more about her forthcoming talk at the Hypatia Trust in Penzance:
What do humans need for wellbeing from their environments? Much research has focused on ‘green’ matters, but the built environment has equal, probably more, impact on our mental, our emotional, and our physical health and happiness. So why has no one heard about this?
The answer is that this is a brand-new area of research only made possible by recent advances in scientific techniques.
I have always been fascinated by the way people behave in different settings and wondered why? Having latterly studied for a master’s in Landscape Architecture, I combined my background in science find out answers to this question, which I will be sharing in my talk.
I will introduce the impact of urban design on our wellbeing – the good and the bad. By comprehending our environmental needs we can understand what works and doesn’t. On this basis, we can begin to develop a real understanding for designing and building places that enable people to thrive, rather than simply survive.
